Are You Ready for a Background Check?
You will probably need to survive one to get your next job.

Are you looking for a job? Maybe you're wondering if you will need to soon.

Along with everything else you need to deal with while you’re looking for you next job, there are detailed employment applications to fill out. These forms ask about the places where you’ve lived and the companies where you’ve worked. There are questions about your educational history and requests for the contact information of your personal references. Some employment applications ask for even more information.

If any of the companies you apply to decide to confirm the information you provide them, they will do this by performing a background check on you. When this happens, you must survive your background check to move from a candidate to an employee.

The term background check refers to a process that verifies the information provided on an employment application, but it can also suggest a more in-depth process that can find undisclosed information and reveal a person's history.

A background check can:
  • Verify employment applications
  • Find undisclosed information
  • Reveal a person's history

Companies use background checks to help ensure they make more objective decisions by matching your individual results to their predetermined guidelines. Some jobs require background checks due to federal regulations, state laws, or industry standards. As a result, a background check can help a company determine if you meet their policy and job requirements.

While most background checks still occur during hiring, many companies require background checks during promotions also. Some companies have polices that require background checks of contractors, volunteers, and others. A few companies even require periodic or random background checks.

An owner, accountant, or manager might perform your background check at a small company. Recruiting, Human Resources, or security staff might perform your background check at a larger company. The results are similar regardless of who performs the background check so more companies every day are working with background check companies to perform them instead.
