Filing a Background Check Complaint

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Accepts and Investigates Complaints About Background Checks

You Have the Right to Accurate Background Check Reports

According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), both the consumer reporting company and the information provider (that is, the person, company, or organization that provides information about you to a consumer reporting company) are responsible for correcting inaccurate or incomplete information in your background check report. To protect your rights under the law, contact both the consumer reporting company (background checking company) and the information provider (originator of background check information) to dispute any information. For more information, search for "How to Dispute Credit Report Errors" at ftc.gov/credit.

The FTC works to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop and avoid them. To file a complaint or get free information on consumer issues, visit ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261.
